Background

Established prior to the universal availability of CAD, legacy data was created on the drawing board and stored as paper in plan chests or backed up on microfilm, which was slowly deteriorating over time. The next generation of design was carried out in 2D CAD and stored in an explorer structure as DWG files with associated paper documentation, printed and filed as reference material. With today’s expectations for information at your fingertips, legacy data availability came up short. In order to improve access-speed and to deliver this information where it is required across the business, Trend Control Systems embarked on sourcing a solution to solve these issues.

 

The Challenge

The solution had to be simple and intuitive to use for casual and non-technical users, whilst allowing sophisticated searching. It had to be able to cope with all required data formats and be accessible to users distributed throughout the company.

The Solution

Once the technical document has been located a thumbnail provides quick positive identification with the ability to zoom to full screen in order to interrogate the data further. Using simple zooming and panning tools to navigate around the data, a print or plot of either the full document or the selected area can be output. The system, of course, supports all of the file formats Trend required, and include: TIFF, DWG and DXF. As an added bonus the ability to ‘redline’ information could also be useful in the future. The solution delivers information to multiple concurrent users anywhere across the company via LAN or WAN whilst providing security options to allow systems administration and updating by specified users.
